It’s impossible to browse social media now that the grilling season has officially begun without coming across a recipe for burnt hot dog ends. They were a hit with us, so we tried them out to see how they compared.

What is hot dog burned ends?

The burnt end is made by the pointy ends of the large piece of meat, which become crisp and charred during the smoking process. Once a piece of meat that was torn out, it became something delicious when mixed with sweet and tangy barbecue sauce.

Hot dogs were created for those who didn’t want to spend the money or time to smoke a whole brisket to get a taste of burnt ends. Hot dogs can be charred, sauced, and seasoned to mimic the taste and texture of burnt end.

Ingredients for Hot Dog Burnt Ends

  • Dogs: You can use any brand you like. For optimal results, I suggest plump and juicy hot dogs.
  • Mustard: The old-fashioned mustard works well for preparing hot dogs. You can use Dijon mustard for the dipping.
  • Barbecue Rub: You can use your own dry rub or buy a ready-made blend.
  • Barbecue Sauce: You can either make your own BBQ sauce or buy a bottle from the supermarket.

What to do with Hot Dog Burnt Ends?

Hot dog links should be scored in a cross pattern, then covered with yellow mustard. Before transferring the meat to hot grill grates, sprinkle with barbecue spice. As the scored areas begin to become crispy and open, the slow charring of meat on the grill will expose more surface.

Cut the hotdogs into small pieces and toss in the barbecue sauce. Return them to the grill to slowly cook them, resulting in a sweet, glossy coating.

Hot dog burnt end can be eaten on its own, or dipped into honey mustard sauce.

Hot dog burnt end are sometimes referred to budget barbecue bites. I think they are an excellent way to reinvent a favorite barbecue dish. The two ways they can be cooked on the grill takes a bit more time, but it is a fairly hands-off process. It’s worth the little bit of effort. This was an entirely new way of enjoying hot dogs, which I’d never done before. I loved the texture and couldn’t stop eating that spicy and sweet dipping sauce. The dipping sauce was delicious and I’m excited to serve them at various potlucks, parties and other events throughout the summer.
