Metroid Prime Remastered is more of a faithful remake than a remastered game. Tallon IV’s alien ruins, wilderness and terrain have all been recreated with stunning new textures and models that not only complement the art direction of the original but also enhance its atmosphere. There are no changes to gameplay or level design, but there are some welcome additions, such as new controls, which mirror the standard first-person layouts that most players know. The original control scheme is also still available, along with gyro based aiming.
These changes are what make Metroid Prime Remastered a definitive version of the game, but they also highlight the quality of the core gameplay. As Steven Petite says in our Metroid Prime Remastered review, “It’s an experience that has aged like fine wine, and is every bit as intoxicating now as it was 20 years ago.”
Metroid Prime Remastered is an excellent entry-level deal for those new to the series, while existing owners of Metroid Prime have several more Metroid Prime games to be released this year. Metroid Prime 4 Beyond will be the biggest release, but the artbook Metroid Prime 1 – 3: A Visual Retrospective, which launches on June 24, is also a great option. Hardcover books will feature illustrations, concept art and commentary by Retro Studios and Kensuke Tanabe. Amazon is accepting preorders.
Nintendo is also offering a Metroid Prime wall calendar for 2026. It’s a calendar for 2026, but it includes a planner for 2025, so it won’t be used until the next year.
Metroid Prime is set to have a great year in 2025, but the series as a whole has enjoyed some much-deserved attention for the past few years. Metroid Dread was launched in 2021 as the first new entry to the side-scrolling mainline series in 19 years. Amazon has it on sale for just $51 if you’ve never played it. Metroid Dread Amiibo 2-Pack includes Samus Aran, the E.M.M.I. robot and more. For $23 ($30 was originally), you can get the Metroid Dread Amiibo 2-Pack, which includes figures of Samus Aran and E.M.M.I. You can also play all of the Metroid NES and SNES games, as well as the Game Boy Advance, Game Boy and Game Boy Advance versions, through Nintendo Switch Online.
